What made you apply for the scholarship?
"My teacher Mr. Sweatlock told me about the scholarship and said it sounded like me.  I want to be an Outward Bound instructor, and it is required that all employees have taken at least one Outward Bound adventure.  I wanted the sheer joy of the experience."

What was your favorite activity on the trip?
"My favorite activity was 'solo' where I spent three days and two nights alone fasting.  I liked being alone so I could bathe, write and think.  It was good to be away from people for a while."

Describe your best day on the trip.
"My best day was when I ran 10 miles out of the high peaks to flatter ground.  I had set a goal to sprint all the way and accomplished it.  It was our marathon run."

Would you do it again? Why or why not?
"I would do it again because it is a great experience and a challenge every day. This is what I love to do and I want to be an Outward Bound instructor some day.  This kind of experience keeps you physically and mentally in shape."

How has your adventure changed your outlook?
"I try not to take things for granted because I know how it feels to go without food and only have the clothes on your back.  I appreciate everything more."

Advice for potential Adventure Scholarship applicants:
"Be yourself for the interview. Go for your dreams.  Pick any Outward Bound course that interests you because you will gain so much knowledge about the world and yourself."

The love of wilderness is more than a hunger
for what is always beyond reach; it is also
an expression of loyalty to the Earth,
the Earth which bore us and sustains us,
the only home we shall ever know, the only paradise
we ever need -- if only we had the eyes to see.
